Caring for Others Since 1881

Concordia Lutheran Ministries began in 1881 on a small farm in Cabot, PA, when Christian and Margaretha Oertel opened their home to two orphaned sisters. Their act of compassion inspired local Lutheran pastors to form the Evangelical Lutheran Concordia Home for Orphans and the Aged – a mission rooted in Christian love, service and care for the most vulnerable.
As community needs grew, so did Concordia. What began as a safe haven for children and older adults has evolved into one of the nation’s largest faith-based, nonprofit senior care organizations. Today, Concordia is a CARF-accredited Aging Services Network and recipient of the inaugural Pennsylvania Department of Aging Excellence in Quality Care Award, serving more than 50,000 people each year across inpatient locations and in-home care programs.
In 2004, Concordia welcomed Good Samaritan Hospice into its family of ministries, expanding its faith-based mission to include compassionate hospice care for patients and families facing advanced illness. Founded in 1998 on Christian principles, Good Samaritan Hospice had already established a trusted reputation for delivering exceptional end-of-life care throughout western Pennsylvania. Building upon that legacy, Concordia has continued to expand access to personalized hospice services, bereavement support and community outreach, ensuring patients and families receive comfort, dignity and compassionate guidance when they need it most.
Concordia now offers a lifetime continuum of services, including retirement living, personal care, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, short-term rehab, hospice, home health, rehabilitation, adult day services, spiritual care and medical equipment. Through every expansion, our mission has remained the same: to serve the Triune God by providing for the needs of His people.
