What Is Life Like in a Retirement Living Community? Real Stories from Arbutus Park

Retirement living residents of Concordia at Arbutus Park enjoy time in their kitchen

What is life really like in a retirement living community?

For many older adults and their families, that question comes with a mix of curiosity and uncertainty. While floor plans and amenities are important, what truly defines the experience is something harder to capture – the people, the peace of mind and the day-to-day lifestyle.

At Concordia at Arbutus Park, a retirement living community in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, residents often say it’s those everyday moments that make the biggest difference. From maintenance-free living to meaningful friendships and access to care when it’s needed, the community offers a lifestyle designed to simplify life and bring comfort.

To better understand what that looks like, we spoke with residents and a team member about their experiences.

Finding a Place That Feels Meant to Be

When Pat Griffith-Hughes first walked into her retirement living cottage, she didn’t need time to think it over.

“I walked in and thought, ‘This is it,’” she said. “It just felt like it was meant to be.”

Although the moment felt immediate, Pat’s connection to Arbutus Park had actually begun years earlier. Through women she knew at Armagh United Methodist Church in Armagh, Pennsylvania, she had become familiar with the community and the people who lived there.

At the time, however, she wasn’t actively searching for a new place to live. After the loss of her second husband, she had spent several years continuing to manage her home on her own. But gradually, the responsibilities of upkeep – and the reality of living alone – began to weigh on her.

“I thought, ‘I can’t keep up my beautiful home anymore,’” she said.

One November day, she decided to take a drive – a simple decision that would change her life for the better.

When she arrived at Arbutus Park, a team member showed her a cottage – the one she now calls home.

“It had everything I needed,” she said.

Shortly after deciding to move, another piece fell into place: her niece chose to purchase her home, keeping it in the family and easing what can often be one of the most difficult parts of a transition.

“It all just worked out,” Pat said. “It was like everything fell into place the way it was supposed to.”

Today, nearly a decade later, she hasn’t looked back.

“I never missed my house,” she said. “It’s been a blessing after a blessing.”

The Freedom of Maintenance-Free Living

For Bob and Margie Roseman, life at Arbutus Park is defined by simplicity – and the freedom that comes with it.

The couple has lived in the community for nearly 13 years, and their perspective is clear.

“It was the best thing we’ve ever done,” Margie said. “We’ve been very blessed living here.”

Their connection to Arbutus Park began while helping a family member explore care options. What they saw during that time made a lasting impression.

“They were so good to my brother,” Margie said. “That’s when we felt this is where we belong.”

Today, one of the biggest benefits they highlight is maintenance-free living.

“You don’t have to shovel snow or worry about things like that,” Bob said.

For Margie, that’s something she appreciates even more over time.

“When we first moved here, I loved working outside in the garden,” she said. “Now, it’s nice to know everything is taken care of.”

Without the responsibilities of home maintenance, residents are able to focus on what matters most – whether that’s spending time with friends, participating in activities or simply enjoying a more relaxed pace of life.

A Community That Feels Like Family

Beyond convenience and comfort, residents consistently point to one defining feature of life at Arbutus Park: the people.

“It’s like one big family,” Margie said.

That sense of connection can be seen in everyday moments – from shared meals and gatherings to conversations with neighbors.

Pat experienced that firsthand shortly after moving in. On her very first day, she met a neighbor who had recently lost her spouse. What began as a simple visit turned into a lasting friendship.

“We talked for five hours, and we’ve been friends ever since,” Pat said.

For many residents, those relationships become just as important as the physical space they call home.

Peace of Mind for Today – and Tomorrow

Another key part of the retirement living experience is the reassurance that comes with planning for the future.

At Concordia at Arbutus Park, residents have access to additional levels of care if their needs change – including personal care, memory care, short-term rehabilitation and long-term nursing care.

For Pat, that peace of mind has been invaluable.

“I feel very safe here,” she said. “I know that when the time comes, I’ll be taken care of.”

That sense of security extends to families as well, offering comfort in knowing their loved ones have support when they need it.

A Team That Feels Like Family

For Admissions and Resident Coordinator Kelsey Josephson, the sense of community at Concordia at Arbutus Park isn’t just something residents experience – it’s something she feels every day in her work.

Kelsey’s connection to Arbutus Park began years ago, when she worked as an Activities Aide during high school. After graduating from college, she returned to the community in her current role, something she had always hoped to do.

“I had always loved working here and made it a goal to return,” she said.

Now, two years into her position, Kelsey plays an important role in helping new residents transition into independent living – often meeting individuals and families at the very beginning of their journey.

Over time, those relationships grow into something more meaningful.

“My residents have become like family to me,” she said. “I would do anything for them, and I know they would do the same for me.”

That sense of connection is something Kelsey sees reflected throughout the community. Residents regularly step up to welcome newcomers, volunteer at events and support one another.

Creating Space for Connection

One of Kelsey’s most meaningful experiences has come from a simple idea: creating more opportunities for conversation.

Following the transition to Concordia, she helped introduce a monthly coffee gathering for retirement living residents – a smaller, more informal setting where residents could receive updates, ask questions and share feedback.

What started as a small group quickly grew.

“When we first started, fewer than 10 residents attended,” she said. “Once word spread, attendance more than tripled.”

More importantly, the gatherings created a space where residents felt comfortable speaking openly.

“I’m often told how much they appreciate having a place to ask questions and feel heard,” Kelsey said. “It’s become one of my favorite things we do.”

Support Behind the Scenes

Kelsey credits much of that success to the support she receives from her team and Concordia leadership.

“Since the acquisition, I’ve felt nothing but support,” she said. “There is always someone willing to help or offer guidance.”

That collaboration allows her to focus on what matters most: making sure residents feel valued, supported and listened to.

“Our goal is to make sure their needs are met and their opinions are heard,” she said.

Why Families Trust Arbutus Park

That commitment is one of the reasons families continue to place their trust in Arbutus Park.

“Arbutus has a long-standing reputation for high-quality care in the Johnstown area,” Kelsey said. “Families know their loved ones are not only being cared for, but truly valued.”

For Kelsey, that trust is something she and her coworkers take seriously every day.

“Everyone here is willing to step in and help, no matter the situation,” she said. “That teamwork makes a huge difference in the care we provide.”
