The roots of Concordia Lutheran Ministries go back to 1881 when western PA religious leaders began exploring options for how to address the growing orphan population in the region. Since that time, our organization has evolved from a small, safe haven for orphan children to one of today's premier nonprofit Aging Services Network in the nation. It's a remarkable story filled with practicality and leaps of faith; discord and harmony; tragedy and joy; uncertain finances and unexpected providence. Christian and Margaretha Oertel, an elderly childless couple, started caring for two orphaned sisters on their 46-acre farm in Cabot, PA. The couple then decided to donate their land to a group of Pittsburgh-area pastors to create a faith-based mission for orphans and the elderly - the Evangelical Lutheran Concordia Home for Orphans and the Aged.
Concordia completed its first construction project - a new building to house the children. The campus would continue to grow as the mission did, including barns, workshops, a bakery, a laundry and more.
Though Concordia had cared for seniors in various capacities since the 1880s, a Home for the Aged was officially opened on the Cabot campus.
After reducing the farm and orphanage operations in order to better care for seniors, Concordia closed the orphanage portion of its mission. In total, over 1,000 orphans were cared for at Concordia.
To expand its services and help even more seniors, Concordia opened its first Haven building of retirement living apartments and the Charles C. Markus Hall, its first dedicated skilled nursing building, on its Cabot campus.
Concordia founded ConcordiaCare, which would later become Concordia Visiting Nurses, in order to offer in-home care to the community. What started as a handful of home health employees is now a company of hundreds who provide high-quality in-home skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, palliative care and much more.
For the first time in its history, Concordia expanded beyond its Cabot campus with the acquisition of Concordia at Ridgewood Place in Plum, PA and Concordia at the Orchard in Butler, PA - just two of the many additions that would follow in Western Pennsylvania.
Concordia embraced hospice care by acquiring Good Samaritan Hospice (GSH), a non-profit hospice company founded on Christian principles, that had served the community since 1998. Since becoming a mission of Concordia, GSH has expanded its reach and today offers in-home hospice care throughout western Pennsylvania and inpatient care at the GSH Hospice House in Wexford, PA and at Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital in Beaver, PA.
With the acquisition of Concordia at Sumner in Copley, OH (a suburb near Akron), Concordia expanded past state lines for the first time.
Concordia Community Support Services was created as the managing company for Concordia Visiting Nurses (CVN), Concordia Hospice of Washington, Concordia Private Care and VNA Alliance. The same year, CVN also partnered with four hospitals: Butler Health System, Heritage Valley Health System, St. Clair Hospital and Washington Health System.
Even more hospice options were added to the Concordia continuum of care with the acquisition of Concordia Hospice of Washington, which offers in-home hospice care and inpatient care at the Donnell House in Washington, PA.
Concordia acquired its second out-of-state location, Concordia Village of Tampa, in Tampa, FL.
Concordia Community Support Services partnered with Indiana Regional Medical Center (IRMC) to create Concordia-IRMC VNA, a new organization that incorporated the VNA of Indiana County to provide the residents of Indiana and the surrounding communities with high-quality home health and hospice services.
