Why I Chose Concordia: William Mentecky

William M

Did you know Concordia has multiple senior care locations that offer retirement living in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and Tampa, Florida? We hear a lot of great things from our residents and their families about our services, and we wanted to take the opportunity to share one of those stories with you. Enjoy getting to know William Mentecky!

Born in Germany after WWII, William grew up speaking German, Polish, English and French.

“I can’t speak much now,” William said. “After we moved from Germany to the United States in 1952, we didn’t speak anything but English.

William’s mother, originally from Poland, moved to Germany during the war where she met William’s father, who was enlisted in the U.S. Army.

“My father was from Arnold, Pennsylvania,” William said. “He was a tank commander who fought in the Battle of the Bulge.”

Relocating to the Western Pennsylvania region after the war, William grew up with his parents in Springdale as an only child.

“My mother learned English from watching television,” William said. “I Love Lucy was one of her favorite shows.”

William would go on to serve in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969.

After the war ended, he enrolled at Point Park University and studied Information Sciences.

“Point Park was one of the only colleges that offered that program at the time,” William noted.

After finishing his undergraduate program, he furthered his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, receiving a Masters degree in the same field.

He would go on to work for Westinghouse for nearly 30 years.

“I worked in the IT department,” William said. “It was great, I enjoyed seeing all of the new technology coming out.”

Moving to Concordia at Cabot in April 2018 to downsize after his wife passed away, William still enjoys using the latest technology.

“I have my tablet and a few other devices here,” William said. “It’s interesting to see everything changing so rapidly.”

In addition to his interest in technology, William spends time with his Pug, Lucy. He also enjoys reading and visiting with his two sons and grandson.

“I love it here,” William said. “You can’t find a better place, you really can’t – the staff is what makes it.”
