Retirement Living Couple Enjoying Highpointe Worry-Free Lifestyle

Dougherty highpointe 1

Did you know Concordia has multiple senior care locations that offer retirement living? At any given time, we are serving around 1,000 seniors in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and Tampa, Florida in that one service line alone! We hear a lot of great things from our retirement community residents and their families about our services, and we wanted to take the opportunity to share one of their stories with you.

Tom and Joan Dougherty moved into Highpointe at Rebecca, Concordia’s newest retirement community, last November. After living in their home on nearby Cramlington Drive in Gibsonia for 41 years and wanting to get away from the potential hazards that came with it, the Doughertys knew it was time to make the transition to Highpointe.

“There are good sized apartments, no steps  and a lovely set of staff members and residents,” Tom said. “Moving here was painless and easy.”

Tom grew up in the Morningside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, one of five children. He got a job at the old Commonwealth Bank in downtown Pittsburgh and worked there for 40 years. He has two children: Joe and Jody.

Joan grew up in Crescent Township and worked for Union National Bank for 20 years. She also has two kids of her own, Joseph and Joan. Together, Tom and Joan stay very busy spending a lot of time with their five grandchildren, supporting them in sporting events, school events and other activities they are involved in.

At Highpointe, the couple enjoys attending monthly bingo, church services and musical performances held on campus.

“We love going to the events that take place here,” Joan added. “Some of my all-time favorite performances have been right here at my home!”

Most importantly, Joan is very grateful for all the assistance and care that she has received from the Concordia staff after a serious surgery.

“After my spinal surgery, I had to wear a neck collar for three months, and I was able to have all of my physical therapy and medication available in the comfort of my apartment,” Joan said. “That was a special blessing for me.”

The Doughertys could not be any happier that they chose to make their retirement home at Concordia.

“We originally thought about getting a patio home,” Tom said. “But at 81 and 83 years old, coming to Highpointe was the best decision for us and every expectation we had has been met.”
