Haven Resident Makes a Difference Volunteering with Good Samaritan Hospice

June 24, 2014

For some people, volunteerism isn’t just a hobby, it’s a regular part of their everyday lives. Bette Miller – formerly of Washington state and now a resident at Concordia Haven Apartments – is one of those people.

Throughout her life, Bette has spent countless hours giving back to the communities she's lived in and the organizations she's believed in. In 2007, her father was in hospice care as he faced cancer. That experience led her to one of her more recent volunteer activities, serving in a variety of roles at Good Samaritan Hospice (GSH).

CampErin14 007“They asked me if I would be interested in volunteering at the GSH Cabot Inpatient Unit, and the answer was a definite yes,” she said. “It was almost like they read my mind.”

Since then, she has served as a “big buddy” at Camp Erin Pittsburgh, a general helper at the Cabot Inpatient Unit (one of her main duties is to maintain the kitchen during lunch time) and 5K fundraiser, a plant sale cashier and an “Angel on Call.”

Angels on Call are trained volunteers who do their best to make sure GSH patients are never alone at the end of their life. The volunteers provide companionship and much more.

“Almost weekly, I have been privileged to visit with the family and friends of patients,” Bette said. “My goal is always to do anything I can for them during their time with GSH, but I always walk away feeling blessed by the people I have interacted with.”

The response to the Angels on Call program has been especially positive, but more help is always needed. After training, Angels on Call volunteers commit to times they can be available at a moment’s notice to go and sit with a GSH patient or family. Trainings are offered throughout the year.

Volunteer opportunities with Angels on Call/GSH in general include:

  • General care/companionship
  • Cooking
  • Memory quilts
  • Prayer Shawl ministry
  • Clerical support
  • Fundraising event support
  • Bereavement visitation
  • Music ministry
  • Pet therapy
  • And so much more

Bette and her husband Dennis attend St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Butler, PA. In her free time, Bette is a “news junkie” and enjoys following politics. Some of her other interests are sports, biking and playing pool and ping-pong with Dennis.
