Concordia at Cabot welcomed over 1,300 guests at our Summer Festival – our biggest crowd in recent years – for a perfect day and clear blue skies! Residents, families, staff and community members enjoyed all the classic parts of our Summer Festival: fellowship, great food, upbeat music, a worship service, kids’ activities and more. We thank everyone for attending and for our amazing team of volunteers and employees who ensure this event goes off without a hitch every year.
Kids had fun with free activities and a mini fishing derby at the pond behind the Lund Care Center, and kids of all ages enjoyed delicious picnic-themed food from our kitchen, music from the Pittsburgh Doo Wop Big Band and a car cruise with over 80 classic cars and tractors.
New to the event this year was a very special king-sized quilt that was hand-sewn by Concordia Haven Retirement Apartment resident Flo Bump. She and her Haven Quilt group will be selling tickets for an opportunity to win the quilt at upcoming Concordia events, with all proceeds going to Concordia’s Good Samaritan Endowment Fund, which underwrites charitable care at Concordia. Look for them next at Concordia’s Oktoberfest and Vendor Sale, as well as other events yet to be decided. Only 1,000 tickets will be available (1 for $6 or 5 for $25), with a winner to be drawn at the Vendor Sale in November.

Rev. Barry Keurulainen, a retired pastor and 18-year Concordia Parent Board Member, was the guest preacher for our traditional worship service. He spoke on Concordia’s history and the importance of thanking others. He opened his sermon by sharing memories from Jim Sleigh, a current Concordia resident who also lived at Concordia as a child when it was an orphanage, which were written by Jim’s daughter Amy.

The Pittsburgh Lutheran Chorus, comprised of singers from Concordia’s member churches, opened and closed the service.
Concordia President and CEO Keith Frndak closed out the day by thanking our staff, volunteers, community and board members for continuing to support the work that Concordia does every day. He asked for their continued support and prayers as Concordia’s mission grows and serves more and more people every year.
