Concordia at Sumner Resident Turns 101

Copley, OH – Concordia at Sumner skilled nursing resident Serena Sutton celebrated her 101st birthday on January 2, 2019.  She arrived at Concordia in September of 2017.

Born in Virginia one of four children, she moved with her father’s family in Baltimore to continue her education. A graduate of Bowie State University in Maryland, she earned her M.A. degree from Berean College in Ohio and an Honorary Doctorate degree where she became the Dean of Registrars.

She and her husband George had two daughters, April who lives in California and Nina who passed away at age 45.

Both her grandparents were slaves.  Serena likes music and listens to classical as well as her favorites, Duke Ellington and Cab Callaway. Her church is a priority in her life and as a Baptist she was baptized twice – once as an infant and again as an adult in the Jordan River during her world travels. She reads her Bible and also enjoys reading Shakespeare.  But she enjoys being around people and attending musical programs, outings and exercise groups at Concordia.
Among her favorite activities are watching baseball and basketball and attributes her longevity to spending time with friends and family.  Serena won medals at the senior citizens Olympics being the second fastest sprinter in her age category (80-90 years old).
