Tips for Communicating with a Loved One Who Has Alzheimer’s

November 23
+

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are approximately 6.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s dementia. What this number doesn’t include is the number of loved ones and caregivers who are also affected. Although there is no cure yet, there are some things we can do to help put our loved ones who are living with memory impairments at ease. One of those things is learning how to communicate with them effectively.

In honor of November being National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we’ve asked Concordia Adult Day Services Director Stefanie Dietrich some questions regarding communication and Alzheimer’s disease.

November 18
+

At Concordia Lutheran Ministries, our employees are at the heart and hands of our mission – they care for our residents and patients with their hard work, kindness and empathy and keep our organization running with their leadership, vision and dedication.

Watching our amazing staff handle the unprecedented challenges of 2020 that continue into this year has been truly inspiring, so we chose to highlight just a few in our 2021 Concordia Calendar as a proclamation of gratitude for their many contributions. Though we wish there could be 3,000 pages in the calendar to feature all of our employees, this small sampling is representative of our extraordinary staff as a whole. Each month, we’ll introduce you to the talented, compassionate team members featured in our calendar.

15 Years Ago Today in Concordia History: The Haven I Fire

November 5
+

Today, we take a moment to recognize the 15th anniversary of the fire that claimed Concordia’s Haven I retirement apartment building. You may be asking, why would we memorialize a tragedy? To answer that, here is a quote from Concordia President and CEO Keith Frndak from the day of the incident, "In terms of property loss, we have a catastrophe. In terms of people, we were very blessed."

+

In recognition of National Physical Therapy Month, we wanted to take a moment to thank physical therapists at Concordia and around the world for the work you do to help your patients - in any setting - achieve their goals. Your drive and ability to motivate and strengthen those you serve does not go unnoticed. THANK YOU for all you do!

In this article, we are taking a look at the primary goals of physical therapy, common misconceptions and the benefits of providing physical therapy in the home setting. Helping us unpackage and understand this information is the accomplished Concordia Visiting Nurses physical therapist Lynn McKinnis. In a Concordia blog published in 2014, we featured a story on Lynn and how she helped a home health patient recover from two knee replacements from the comfort of his own home.

Clergy Appreciation Month 2021: Concordia’s Current Chaplaincy Staff Reflects on Concordia History

October 12
+

With this being Clergy Appreciation Month during Concordia’s 140th Anniversary year, we wanted to take a look at our history through the lens of our Chaplaincy Department. This month especially, we recognize our spiritual care staff members and thank them for all they do to share the Lord’s love with our residents, patients and staff each day. Enjoy!

A century plus four decades – that’s a whole lot of history – a history that was initiated by pastors searching for a solution to care for children who had lost one or both parents. An orphanage was the obvious remedy, but “where” and “how” were the questions that troubled the Evangelical Lutheran churches located in Pittsburgh. That answer came through a couple who deeded their farm in Marwood to pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Concordia Synod of Pennsylvania and Other States - a document that included provisions for the care of “aged and indigent men and women.”
